In Memoriam, James P. Murphy, former Board Chairman - Futures in Education Endowment Fund

James Murphy was one of the founding members of the Futures in Education Board of Trustees. Throughout his 18 years of service to the Futures Board (1989-2007), Mr. Murphy lent his talents on several Committees and was a tireless advocate of Catholic education. Thanks in large measure to his stewardship, Futures in Education has distributed in excess of $25,000,000 in tuition assistance for families who recognize and appreciate the value of Catholic education and the role it plays in preparing their children for the future.
Mr. Murphy graduated from LaSalle Academy, Manhattan College and Fordham Law School, where he was a member of the law review. At his retirement, he was an Executive Vice President and Director of Public Policy for Fleet Financial Group. Previously he was the Executive Vice President of the New York State Bankers Association, was a Vice President at Chemical Bank, and was an associate at Shearman & Sterling.
Mr. Murphy died on November 27, 2011 at the age of 80. He is survived by his beloved, wife of 55 years, Margaret. He is remembered with great love by his children and their spouses, Patricia, Jim and Linda, Michael, Matthew and Amy, Chris and Karen and Cathy and Juan and his grandchildren, James III, Andrew, Charlie, Julia, Lily, Billy, Ryan, Danny, Jack, James and Cate.
On behalf of the tens of thousands of students who have benefitted from the tuition assistance provided by Futures in Education, we thank James Murphy for his commitment to Catholic education in Brooklyn and Queens.
May He rest in peace.
