About our schools:

  • 123 elementary and high schools enroll 45,697 students
  • Nearly 60% of New York City's school age children reside in Brooklyn and Queens
  • 21% of Brooklyn residents live in poverty, compared to 18% throughout NYC’s five boroughs
  • Our schools form the 5th largest, and only solely urban system of parochial schools in the nation
  • More than 63% of Catholic school students in Brooklyn and Queens elementary and secondary schools are minorities and almost 22% are non-Catholic
  • Cost efficient: per pupil spending averages $4,398 compared to over $18,265 per pupil in NYC public elementary schools; savings to NYC taxpayers – over $800 million per year
  • Average tuition in Diocesan Catholic schools of $3,647 (exclusive of various fees such as registration fees, book fees, computer, etc.) covers  only 83% of costs; the rest comes from fundraising and donations

Dividends:

  • Catholic elementary school students consistently outperform their NYC public school counterparts: 64.7% of 8th graders meet or exceed state  standards in English Language Arts (includes special education students), compared with 46.3% of NYC public school students
  • 99% of students in Catholic secondary schools graduate within 4 years, compared with 59% of students in NYC public secondary schools
  • 98% of the graduating classes in Catholic secondary school goes on to college, compared with 45% of NYC public high school students 

Scholarships Awarded (2010-2011 School Year):

  • Angel scholarships from 206 “Angel” sponsors totaling $754,082 were awarded to 497 students
  • Diocese of Brooklyn scholarships totaling $2,318,400 were awarded to 2,931 students
  • Bishop’s Scholarships totaling $3,107,479 were awarded to 1,760 students
  • Our 8th grade students were awarded $10,368,477 in academic scholarships to Catholic high schools

Our Programs:

  • School-Business Partnership Program-Unites caring businesses and corporations in distinctive partnerships with Catholic elementary schools in the Diocese of Brooklyn
  • Be an Angel to a Student Program- A chance to sponsor students, get to know them and share in their successes
